VITAMIN B6 Vitamin B6 refers to three different but closely related water-soluble substances: pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. All forms are common in foods and are interchangeable in biological systems. Vitamin B6 is required for over 60 enzyme reactions in the body. Because vitamin B6 is water-soluble any excess is quickly removed from the body and thus a daily supply is needed. Although vitamin B6 deficiencies are thought to be very rare. a marginal deficiency sometimes occurs in alcoholics, patients with kidney failure, and women using oral contraceptives. People with kidney failure and some people with chronic fatigue syndrome have an increased risk of vitamin B6 deficiency. The Benefits of Vitamin B6 Premenstrual syndrome - 65% of women taking B6 experience relief from symptoms including depression, irritability, tiredness, breast tenderness and water retention. Mood changes caused by the contraceptive pill - oestrogen is thought to reduce B6 levels, resulting in a low state of mind, mild anaemia and disrupted blood sugar levels. Supplementation can usually reverse this. Heart health - reduces levels of homocysteine in the blood. High levels of this substance are associated with clogging of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Kidney stones - vitamin B6 (especially when taken with magnesium) has been shown to reduce the recurrence of kidney stones. Carpal tunnel syndrome - success has been shown at reducing symptoms when taken for a minimum of three months. Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting - due to irradiation, drug therapy, anaesthesia and travel sickness. Properties Vitamin B6 is essential for the processing of many proteins and amino acids, converting them into other amino acids and chemicals required by the brain and nerves (serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine). Protein manufacture is required for the growth, development and continued health of all cells and tissues. Vitamin B6 is also needed for the formation of red blood cells and prostaglandins (hormone like substances) and plays a major role in balancing hormone levels and maintaining a healthy immune system. In combination with folic acid and vitamin B12, vitamin B6 lowers levels of homocysteine a substance associated with heart disease and stroke. Contra-indications/Precautions Pregnant and breast-feeding women should consult their doctor before taking vitamin B6. Should not be taken by anyone taking levadopa, or the anticonvulsants phenytoin and phenobarbitone.
