Improved Formula Vitamin B Complex The vitamin B complex includes all water-soluble vitamins with the exception of vitamin C. It was originally thought that vitamin B was a single substance but as scientific techniques improved many variations were found and include thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin, folic acid and cobalamin (vitamin B12). As the numbering sequence implies, there were thought to be more than 8 B vitamins but it was discovered that some had been numbered twice and some did not agree with the definition of true vitamins i.e. i) they cannot be made by the tissues, ii) a deficiency causes symptoms and iii) signs and symptoms are reversed when the appropriate vitamin is given. The Benefits of Vitamin B Complex Those taking single B vitamin supplements - high levels of any one B vitamin may increase the need for the others in the group. If taking a single high potency B vitamin supplement, a low potency B complex vitamin supplement should also be taken. Constipation - can be caused in some people when deficient in B vitamins. Stress - when stressed, the body requires more B vitamins than normal to assist in adrenaline production. They also assist sleep quality, important in such times. Mental health - low levels of B vitamins can cause low moods, nervousness and irritability. Low energy - physical and mental lethargy are symptoms of vitamin B deficiency. Properties B vitamins - are required for good mental and physical health. Although they all share the same prefix no function requires all B-complex vitamins simultaneously. B vitamins are all different with unique functions. Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5 and biotin participate in different aspects of energy production, vitamin B6, folic acid and biotin are required for amino acid and protein metabolism, and vitamin B12 and folic acid facilitate steps required for cell division. The need for water-soluble vitamins increases when the body loses more water than usual, e.g. when taking water tablets (diuretics) or when exercising. For more detail see Table 1 at the end of this manual. Choline - is needed for healthy cell membranes and for the transport of fats in and out of cells. It is also a component of the brain messenger acetylcholine, which is needed for normal brain functioning, particularly in infants. Inositol - is required for good mental health, healthy cell membranes, nerve function and the transport of fats within the body. Contra-indications / Precautions Although generally safe, B vitamins, choline and inositol represent a group of diverse compounds and drug interactions and precautions should checked individually.
