In 1536, James Cartier gave one of the earliest descriptions of vitamin deficiency disease, describing the symptoms of what is now known to be scurvy. In the 18th century, British doctors discovered that supplementing the diet with lime juice could prevent this disease, causing British Sailors to become known as "limeys." We now know that the anti-scurvy factor in lime juice was vitamin C. Vitamin C is water-soluble and is the body's most important antioxidant. It complements the fat-soluble anti-oxidants vitamin E and carotenes and is responsible for regenerating oxidised vitamin E. Some experts refer to vitamin C as the most important part of any nutritional supplement. The Benefits of Vitamin C Resistance to infection - studies have shown that vitamin C levels become depleted during the course of infection. Vitamin C supplements reduce the duration of colds. Tissue repair - following surgery, fractures and burns, vitamin C has been shown to reduce healing time and help the healing process. Teeth and Gums - required for healthy teeth and gums. One of the signs of vitamin C deficiency is bleeding gums. Osteoarthritis - has been shown to benefit sufferers probably due to its collagen formation role, plus, it has been shown to relieve the pain and stiffness. Heart health - low levels of vitamin C have been linked with heart disease and clogging of the arteries. Smoking - can cause fats to be converted to forms that block blood vessels and can damage proteins. Vitamin C's anti-oxidative properties can prevent this. Asthma - is a local response in the lungs to allergens such as pollen. These cause the release of free radicals and affect lung function. Vitamin C is the primary anti-oxidant in the lungs. Anaemia - vitamin C is required for the efficient uptake of iron. Properties Vitamin C - is the most important water-soluble biological anti-oxidant. It also restores vitamin E back to its protective form after it has absorbed free radicals. Vitamin C helps to develop and maintain healthy tissues and immune system. It is vital to the production of collagen, which is required for the growth, repair and physical structure of tissues, including gums, blood vessels, bones and teeth. It also helps the body absorb transport and store iron. Citrus bioflavonoids - an anti-oxidant group of plant substances that affect the strength of blood capillary walls. They also improve vitamin C absorption by around one third. Rosehip and Acerola (West Indian Cherry) - naturally rich in vitamin C. Contra-indications/Precautions Vitamin C supplementation is not advisable for people who suffer with kidney stones or those with iron overload (hemosiderosis or haemochromatosis).
